These various works of the Holy Spirit are part of a harmonious action, a sole divine plan of love. The mission of the Holy Spirit, in fact, is to beget harmony – he is himself harmony – and to create peace in different situations and between different people. Diversity of ideas and persons should not trigger rejection or prove an obstacle, for variety always enriches. So today, with fervent hearts, we invoke the Holy Spirit and ask him to prepare the path to peace and unity.
- Pope Francis, Homily, May 24, 2014, Amman
The Holy Spirit is powerful and active in our world. Sometimes we misunderstand the Holy Spirit, limiting our thoughts to the events of Pentecost. The Spirit seeks to unite all people in peace and harmony. This is not independent on our living. The ten commandments are practical tools that we can use to work with the Spirit in creating peace and harmony. Consider the final seven. They address our relationship with one another. They are not just a list of do’s and don’ts. They are life. When they are lived they set up the right disposition for peace and harmony to grow and flourish. Take time to reflect on one of the commandments, (you can reflect on the others later) and ask yourself “How can I foster harmony and peace my living this commandment?”
